How Are Carbon Fiber Road Bike Rims Produced?

Selected Materials

Precision Layup
Experienced carbon fiber technicians hand-lay the prepreg material layer by layer onto a high-precision mandrel. Each layer is placed strictly according to the predetermined angle and sequence, assisted by laser projection to ensure a layup angle deviation of less than ±1°.
Autoclave Curing
The preform is placed into a high-precision autoclave and cured at 135°C and 0.6 MPa for 90 minutes under constant temperature and pressure. This ensures the resin fully impregnates the carbon fibers and crosslinks evenly, forming a dense structure without bubbles or delamination.
Demolding and Initial Finishing
After curing, the rim is carefully removed from the mold using a hydraulic system. Technicians manually remove flash and burrs with diamond grinding tools and perform coarse polishing on the surface to prepare for final finishing. The entire process is conducted in a Class 1,000 cleanroom to prevent dust contamination.
Precision Machining & CNC Forming
Five-axis CNC machines perform high-precision machining on the rim, including drilling spoke holes, valve hole positioning, and inner diameter finishing.
Surface Treatment & Customization
A multi-layer coating process is applied: first an epoxy primer for adhesion enhancement, followed by a high-performance polyurethane topcoat (available in matte, semi-gloss, or glossy finish). Customization can be done according to client requirements.
